The Troop is planning a winter camping outing at Wheaten Farm Feb 27-28. More information coming soon.
For those interested in the Hiking Merit Badge, we will have a kick off meeting to review requirements and plans, and start work on the MB on Wed Feb 24 at the Queset House, 630-730. Mr Eldridge of Troop 193 will be leading this and this meeting will be a joint meeting with Scouts from Troop 193.
February 24 at Queset House : Join Scouts from both Troop 42 and Troop 193 as we begin work on the Hiking MB. Scouts will be expected to plan a 10 mike hike and partake in several more through this longer term Merit Badge.
(a) Payments due Folks with asterisks next to their names in a recent email from Mr. Rhodes need to arrange or complete payments please.
(b) Departure - Plan is to depart Friday afternoon from the Church. Exact times TBD, Stay tuned for details. (c) Return - They'll kick us out of there around 10 am, so figure probably 1pm Sunday at Tedeschi's. We do not plan to stop for lunch. (d) Preparation - It will probably be cold at night, but this is car camping so there's no reason not to have warm clothing and sleeping gear. (e) Food - Everyone should plan to bring a bag lunch for Friday dinner, and maybe snacks for the day. Scouts will prepare Saturday breakfast, lunch, dinner and Sunday breakfast. (f) misc - there will be a trading shop there with hats, bottles, T shirts, etc. Some Scouts might want to bring a little spending money. Any questions please email, or save them for Monday's meeting. Final details will go out later in the week. Thanks! a) Departure - We will meet at the church early Saturday Morning, 6am. We have a couple hour drive and a couple hour hike, at the least. We're traveling out of council, wear your class-A (unless you're a new Scout that hasn't yet obtained your uniform.) We can remove them once we get to the trail head and leave them in the car.
b) Return - Probably between 2 and 3 on Sunday at Tedeschi village Shoppes lot. As usual we'll call as we near about 20 minutes away. c) Money for Food - If there is an asterisk (*) near your name in the email that was recently sent out, please bring $10 for food when you arrive Saturday morning. d) Fishing Gear - If you plan to fish, be sure you can fold your pole and attach it vertically if necessary to your backpack. Also, I'd suggest a small packable tackle-box and extra line. We do not want to see anyone carrying fishing poles or tackle-boxes by hand - you want to keep your hands free while hiking. e) Water and Snacks - Everyone should bring two full nalgenes for drinking and cooking. Also, everyone is on their own for snacks. I'd suggest granloa, dried fruit, energy bars, trail mix, so on but not candy. Make sure it's packed in a labeled bag. f) Clothing - While rain is not presently expected, do be prepared. Bring rain gear. It will get down to low 40's at night, so be sure to have fleece, wool sweater, long pants/shirt, etc. g) Toiletries - please be sure to pack them in a labeled bag as we will be in bear country and need to place these and all food items in the bear bag at night. Also, this is backcountry camping, bring TP or know your leaves. Do not bring a whole roll else you'll just get it ruined and have to carry it back out. h) Packing Reminder - By this point, everyone should know what needs to be packed, and how to pack it. No one should be carrying something by hand, as above we need our hands free. (a) Three Ponds Trip, Sep 26/27 - Those who have signed up, please bring $10 for food this Monday. Stay tuned for details emailed later this week. Do plan to meet at the Church early on Saturday, as we'll likely depart at 6 am.
(b) NH Jamboree, Oct 9/10/11 - First payment of $25 is due tomorrow to commit your spot on the list. Final payment of $20 is due next Monday. (c) Scout-O, Oct 25 - 5 Scouts have signed up for Scout-O Orienteering competition. I'm planning to register Monday afternoon, so if any one else wants in, please email me by lunch time today. (d) Pancake BreakFast Fundraiser - there'll be a committee meeting this Tuesday, 7pm at the Church. This is the meeting where we go down the detailed line-item list of jobs to do - so if you can help out this would be a good meeting to attend. And we certainly need the help ! (e) Speaking of Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser - We're still looking for folks to ask local businesses if they would like to donate an item to the silent auction or sponsor an ad on the placemat. Please let Mr. Rhodes know.. Mr Peoples of Troop 193 has graciously offered to host the Rifle Shooting Merit Badge again starting Sep 23 and shooting on the 30th. Runs 7-830 at Ames Gun Club off Highland St.
Let Mr. Rhodes know this week please if you're interested. Plan on a small fee to help with books and/or ammo, about $5 give or take. As a reminder the Pancake Breakfast will be held on Nov 7 at the church. Please review these few notes:
a) Placemat ads - The Troop is actively looking for local businesses interested in adopting an ad on the placemat. If you know a business that you can approach, please let me know. Advertisers will get a complimentary ticket to the breakfast and our eternal gratitude. b) Silent Auction items - We will be running our silent auction again this year.If you would like to donate something to the auction, or know a business that will donate something please also let me know. c) Jake Ryan will be coordinating Big-Day work shifts for the Scouts. All Scouts are expected to work a shift as the funds off set all Scouting activity and equipment costs. d) The committee has arranged for four slots with Roche Bros and Shaws to handout flyers and tickets. Scouts are expected to participate to help get the word out. We will look for an adult to be with them too. Jake Ryan will also be coordinating shift signups. e) There will be a committee meeting September 22nd, and if necessary follow up meetings October 6th, and October 20th as we finalize the work to be completed. We will be looking for help on the Friday night before and of course lots jobs to fill on the big day. f) This Monday, Scouts will be handed 10 tickets with which to sell. The Scouts have voted to award the Scout who sells the most with a $25 gift card to Bass Pro Shop, and most importantly a Camping-Duty-Roster-Immunity-Idol. Don't worry - we've got more tickets to sell. Please do what you can to encourage sales, as without this.. there is no fundraiser! Tell your friends, neighbors, family members, etc. g) For your information, when selling a ticket please circle the $5 per Person or $20 per Family (up to 6) depending on which the buyer selected. a) Three Ponds Trail - Sep 26/27 - Backpacking overnighter near Rumney NH. Scouts will hike in, work on Fishing Merit Badge, and work on backpack cooking with lightweight stoves - hopefully they'll pick singlepot meals. Sign up will be posted during the first meeting (Sep 14). Please plan to sign up if you are going as we have only two meetings to prepare and need an accurate head count. There will be a small fee just to cover food, in the area of $10.
b) NH Jamboree - Oct 9-11. Two night overnight in Loudon NH at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway, Friday through Sunday. This Jamboree comes around only once every four years and is jam-packed full of fun and engaging Scouting activities. Flyer attached. Please respond back to me with indication of whether or not you'll attend so we can reserve our spot. We'll be looking for final payments of $45 during the September 21st meeting, to cover food and entrance fee. c) Scout-O - Oct 24 or 25. Please respond back to me if there is interest in attending either of these day-trip Orienteering events. Saturday the 24th will be a practice opportunity, which will take a few hours. Scouts who wish to compete can return on Sunday the 25h for the competition, which will also take just a couple hours. There is a $10 fee for either day, and Scouts participating in both days would pay $18. These events fill up real fast, so please respond back soon. d) Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser- Nov 7. All Scouts are expected to participate in this successful annual endeavor and help in preceding days with organized efforts to get the word out. This is our biggest fundraiser of the year and goes a long way to offset costs of camping trips and pay for Troop equipment. The Troop is considering Summer 2016 Trips to Gettysburg or Washington DC, and a substantial cost of that trip would be funded via the Pancake Breakfast. e) Flag Retirement Ceremony - Nov 11. Each year the Troop properly retires tattered and worn flags contributed by folks in the community. This year we once again would like to challenge Troop 193 to a dutch oven cookoff during the ceremony. f) Thanksgiving Themed Campout - Nov 14/15, possibly Friday night through Sunday. This is our annual bash complete with deep fried turkeys and tons of delicious side dishes created by our Scouts. (adults run the deep fryer) g) December Campout - December 12/13. Scouts have elected to go back to Squanto for this "Troop 42 Tradition", where they'll have the opportunity to prepare and experience cold weather camping, do some delicious cooking, work on advancement, and partake in our annual Yankee Swap. Details to follow but mark the calendars now! |
