Mr. Jennings' Okpik Update February 12, 2015
In response to Mr. Rhodes e-mail and a few questions that have already come up;
1.)If needed, due to the weather, the extra night in Maine would be in the Camp Lodge and not in the snow shelters. So don't let sleeping outdoors be a concern, as everyone will be warm and dry by that point.
2.)You can also bring a standard snow shelter to help build the mound of snow, as well as a smaller type of "garden spade" that will be useful in digging out your snow shelter.
Please let Mr. Rhodes know as soon as possible how this all works out for everyone.

Mr. Rhodes' Okpik Meeting February 10, 2015
As seems to be the trend lately, there is a large snow storm expected this weekend, starting Saturday night and running into Sunday Night in Maine. We just spoke with OKPIK and they plan to keep the camp open.
Problem is that we may be stuck at OKPIK an extra night.
We need to understand if staying an extra night is a showstopper for any Scout as that may affect headcount and our options. Please reply to me directly with any concerns.
Presently, the plan is to meet at the Church for 3pm tomorrow and hit the road shortly after. In addition to the list of supplies that Mr Jennings already sent out and handed out during the Tuesday meeting, please be sure to remember the following:
(a) Show up properly dressed for the weather. Casual wear is ok for the drive up, but be ready for sub-zero temperatures when we arrive at our destination.
(b) Be prepared with extra clothing in the event we're stuck an extra night in Maine.
(c) If you have a smallish shovel to dig out the sleeping area of the quinzee please plan to bring it. Ideally this would be a little smaller than a snow shovel so it's a little easier to manipulate, but not too small to be futile.
(d) A saucer style sled, or a long skinny sled, to help when you are digging out the inside of the quinzee.
(e) Bring some cash - we'll stop for dinner on the way up, there is a small trading post at the camp with some snacks and other items, and we may stop for a snack on the way back. If we're stuck an extra night we may need cash for breakfast/lunch on the way back Monday.
(f) Be sure to have two nalgene bottles of water and high-energy snacks to help keep body warmth.
Please keep an eye out for further emails.

Mr. Jennings' OKPIK Information September 17, 2014
Yes, it is only September, but in we still need to look ahead to put together some opportunities for the Scouts over the Winter months. Yesterday the information for the OKPIK Winter Camping came out and the Troop needs to register as soon as possible if they wish to attend this challenging event, as it sells out quickly.
The OKPIK Program is a Winter Camping experience in Southern Maine, where the Scouts and a few lucky Adults get the opportunity to learn and try out Winter Camping Skills. The Troop has attended several times in the past, and the Scouts have always returned with stories to tell. In trying to offer this opportunity to the Scouts again February 2015, I need to have a rough idea of how many Scouts might be interested in attending, so I need Scouts to either let me know via e-mail and/or sign up at Monday Night’s meeting. The cost is $120.00/Scout for this event, which includes all transportation, food and lodging for the weekend. Presently we are looking at either January 30th – February 1st or February 6th -8th, 2015.
Please let me know if you have any questions.

Scouts should sign up for this event at Monday Night’s meeting. This is a good opportunity to complete the backpacking cooking requirements for the Cooking Merit Badge for the older Scouts looking to advance towards the Rank of Eagle. It will also be another opportunity to work on other Rank Advancement items. This trip will consist of a 3 -4 mile hike into the Campground followed by a hike up Mt. Greylock. Everything will need to be carried in and out for this outing. More information to follow.
8.)Summer Camp will be at both Hidden Valley and Camp Bell, the week of August 10th thru 16th. Never too late to sign up for summer camp, please see one of the Adult Leaders for additional information.
Mr. Jennings' Notices May 28, 2014
1.)The Troop will be leaving on Friday, May 30th from the Church Parking Lot at 3:30 PM. All Scouts, including the 5 Scouts coming out Saturday Morning should have their gear at the Church on Friday, as there will be no room available on Saturday for the gear. However, Scouts going out on Saturday with Mrs. Weatherby, should have a daypack with all the essentials they will need for the day on the river, which includes proper clothing for both on and off the river….as you are going to get wet, some cash (wet suit rental, snacks, etc.). Please remember that you will need “water shoes” to wear on the river.
2.)All parents should check with Mrs. Hoffman prior to leaving their Scout at the Church to ensure that they have a Liability Waiver properly filled out.
3.)All Scouts should bring their Scout Handbook for additional sign-offs that we might complete over the weekend. Scouts that will complete Rank requirements over the weekend and are ready for a Scoutmaster Conference and Board of Review should be prepared to complete the SMC and/or BOR on either Saturday Night or Sunday Morning, as we will try and advance a few Scouts over the weekend and continue the process at Monday Night’s meeting on June 2nd for those Scouts that are ready. (Parents please check your Scouts Handbook and reply back to me if it looks like they are ready for Advancement so that we can get a rough idea of how many Scouts might be advancing)
4.)For those Scouts that still need the animal identification, please create a log of wild animals that you have seen around Town, or evidence of the animals. All you need in your log is the date, time, place, type of animal or evidence of the animal.
5.)For those Scouts that still need the poisonous plant identification, please put together a presentation with pictures and descriptions of local poisonous plants along with the rest of the Advancement Requirement and bring it in on Monday to present to the Troop, or bring it on the Campout to present to everyone.
6.)Please note that since many of our Troop tents have been returned missing poles, we only have a limited number of “good” tents that we have available for the Scouts, therefore Scouts should consider tripling up for this outing, or if you have a two/three man tent please bring it along. Adults and other family members will need to bring their own accommodations, however please try to keep it to smaller two to four man tents, no large “family” tents please. (if possible)
7.)Everyone should remember to bring a “bagged” lunch for dinner on Friday night, as we will not be stopping for dinner on the way out. Scouts should try and remember to bring their standard personal camping equipment…such as water bottle, cook kit, flashlight, etc.
8.)The weather forecast looks to be on the cool and possibly wet side, so everyone should have the proper clothing for camping and white water rafting. This includes proper footwear and raingear, along with the standard changes of clothing that you might need.
9.)Finally, in keeping an eye to the sky, we will be monitoring the weather forecast and there is the possibility that we might be modifying our plans so please watch your e-mails for additional last minute information, in case we make any changes.

Mr. Jennings' Winter Trek Announcement February 2, 2014
Hi Everyone,
Here is some additional information on Winter Trek this weekend,
1.)The Troop will be leaving from the Church Parking Lot at 3:00 PM on Friday afternoon. Scouts should be dressed in their Class “A” uniform for the trip up and back. They won’t need the uniform at Winter Trek, but it is a requirement that we travel in uniform when traveling under a BSA permit. We will stop for dinner on the way up, as we don’t expect to arrive at the Camp until after 8:00 PM.
2.)Everyone should come dressed and prepared for Winter weather, as the forecast is for cold temperatures and the possibility of snow. This means no sneakers, and synthetics over cotton if possible….wool is always best for staying warm. Over the course of the weekend, everyone will be spending a fair amount of time outdoors and in the snow so please be prepared.
3.)The Troop will be sleeping in cabins, so everyone only really needs a sleeping bag and clothing to wear to bed.
4.)The Camp will provide all the meals, however Scouts should bring a water bottle for staying hydrated.
5.)Everyone should bring some spending money for dinner on the way up, lunch on the way back, and for the trading post (if open).
6.)If you have not turned in a medical form, as I am missing a few forms, please bring Parts “A” and “B” with you on Friday.
7.)Presently, we expect to be back in Easton by mid to late afternoon on Sunday, and Scouts can be picked up at the Village Shoppes Parking Lot, however we will be watching the weather and might make adjustments to our travel arrangements based on the forecast.
8.)Adults that are planning to drive should note the following list to confirm that I have the head count correct;
- Mike Berry – 3 Scouts
- Rick Rhodes – 3 Scouts
- Heather Machado – 4 Scouts
- Scott Hamlin – 1 Scout (Coming Up Late)
- Shaji – 3 Scouts
- Lisa Weatherby – 4 Scouts
- Steve Hoffman – 3 Scouts
By this accounting, we have room for 21 Scouts comfortably, and I have assumed that these are all back seat openings and that the front passenger seat is available for adults, of which we have two that are not driving. Please let me know if there has been any changes so that I can adjust accordingly.
Hopefully this information brings everyone up to date, please call with any questions.

Mr. Jennings' Reminders from December 2, 2013
1.)Please sign up for Merit Badge University 2014, as the Troop needs to register by the end of the week to be guaranteed a spot. Merit Badge University will take place over three Saturday Mornings in March and provide Scouts with an opportunity to work on 3 Merit Badges. I have attached the sign-up sheet which should be turned in tonight to reserve your space in March. The cost has yet to be determined but will likely be around $25.00.
2.)If you attended the November Outing, please remember to bring in your payment of $23.00/person for the food that was provided.
3.)The deadline for committing to going to Winter Trek is rapidly approaching, Monday December 9, 2013. We need a final headcount by that date so that we can try to get a Troop refund for the Scouts that signed up but have decided not to attend. Presently, we have 10 Scouts and 9 Adults signed up and paid, making for a total of 19 individuals. The Troop paid for all 33 people that signed up, so we definitely have room for more Scouts that might be interested in attending this popular Scouting event.
4.)Please remember that the December Outing will be at Camp Squanto, December 14th & 15th . The Troop will work on developing skills for Klondike, as well as rank Advancement, plus our Annual Yankee Swap. If any Scouts wishes to participate in the Yankee Swap, please provide a gift to swap worth around $10-$15.00. This outing will also be an excellent opportunity for those Scouts working on the Cooking Merit Badge to work towards completing some of the requirements. The December Outing is considered to be a Winter event and Scouts will need to be properly prepared to be outdoors for the duration, including sleeping in the tents. We have a cabin for the Adults that wish to sleep inside and for the Yankee Swap. The Troop will be leaving from the Church Parking Lot on Saturday Morning at 8:30 AM and returning Sunday Morning around 11:00 AM at the Village Shoppes Parking Lot. There will be a sign-up sheet up at tonight’s meeting for those Scouts and Adults that plan on attending.
5.)Reminder that Scouts interested in Community Service can sign up to assist Ben Jennings with his Eagle Scout Fundraiser and/or assist the Lions Club this Saturday, December 7th. Ben will have a sign-up sheet at tonight’s meeting for those Scouts that would like to either help or donate to his Project. The Lions Club will likely need help around 3:30 PM on Saturday afternoon. I will provide additional information once I hear from the Lions Club.
6.)Please sign up for the Klondike Derby if you wish to attend in January. Hopefully the Troop can organize two “sleds” to compete this year. The Klondike Derby is a fun winter event where Scouts compete against other Troops utilizing Scouting skills. This event will take place on January 11th. The Troop has also volunteered to organize and man the Map & Compass Station for this event, so we will need some Adult and Older Scout volunteers to sign up as well.
7.)Finally, please remember to bring in any and all Troop gear, cleaned and ready to go for the next outing.
