Summer Camp Preparation (2015)

8/4/2015

Summer camp is only a week away and to make sure everyone is ready please note the following information and reminders.

1.) Scouts should plan to arrive at Hidden Valley in their Class “A” uniform with daypack at around 12:30 PM. They will meet their fellow Scouts at the Troop flag in front of the Dining Hall at Hidden Valley between 1-2 PM.    Scouts should bring in a bagged lunch OR eat lunch prior to arriving at the camp.

2.) SPL and ASPL for summer camp along with Scout Master should plan to arrive at the camp between 8:30 AM – 9:30 AM.   Please review SPL/ASPL should review page 34 “Sunday schedule 2015” for the sequence of events on Sunday.  There is a mandatory SM/SPL/ASPL meeting at the Carter lodge at 9:30 AM. Please reach out to Mr. Rhodes next week to discuss travel arrangements, timings etc.,

3.)Please make sure that everyone has the “Medication Administration Record” sheet filled out if medications are needed during the week.  I know some of you have submitted it as part of the medical forms.  Please print out an extra copy and fill in your name, troop details to include with the medication.    All medications should be in the original prescription bottle with Scouts name enclosed in a zip lock bag.  Make sure prescription bottles shows a date that has not expired since the camp will reject it.    Scouts with food allergies requiring epi-pens or Scouts with inhalers will need to meet with the Camp Nurse at registration. Please make sure that any Scout requiring an inhaler or epi pen has the “permission to Carry” form properly filled out and signed by a doctor.   “Permission to carry” is applicable only to those scouts or adults who have not already submitted this form.    I have attached this form to the e-mail.

4.) Scouts and Adults attending either Camp should review the attached personal gear list (Page 55-56 in HVSC leader guide) for information on what to bring to Camp, as well as what should be in their daypack.  Please note that Scouts taking the Swimming Merit Badge and Wilderness Survival will need to bring the additional supplies outlined in the Merit Badge requirements found in either the Merit Badge Handbook or atwww.meritbadge.com. Everyone should check the attached Merit Badge selection sheet to be sure that they have everything they might need to complete their Merit Badge.

5.) Adults planning on staying overnight at Camp, should bring a copy of their Youth Protection certification. Please don’t assume that either the Camp or Troop Leadership has a current copy, although we will try to have all the paperwork complete prior to your arrival at Camp.  PLEASE PRINT A COPY OF THE COMPLETION CERTIFICATE and carry it with you.

6.) Troop photos are $10.00. If you wish to have a Troop photo, please bring $10.00 with you and give it to the Adult Leader in charge of the Troop at Hidden Valley.   Troop photo is scheduled to be taken on Tuesday at 5:00 PM before supper.  Anyone who needs a copy of the photo has to let the adult leader know and pay $10.   Please dress up in full Class “A” and look sharp.

7.) In case parents need to reach out to adult leaders present at the camp, please call the Hidden Valley camp number 603-364-2900.  Please use this for emergency purposes only since adult leaders will be busy managing the troop and their activities. Adult leaders will have access to wifi which is now available at a few locations in the camp. Any important event at the camp which requires notifications to parents will be handled by adult leaders via email/phone.

8.) Please remember to label your trunks with your Campsite, which is Naticook for Hidden Valley . For all scouts attending Hidden Valley for the first time, please make sure that you pack all your gear in a trunk.   You can use a standard storage trunk which the scout can carry by himself or with some assistance.  I picked mine at Home depot which cost $13. If you already have one, please use that. Please do not bring your backpacks to avoid getting wet in rain, damage caused while transporting up/down the hill etc.,

9.) Please have a bug net which has to be tied over your cot.  The tents are standard army tents which is open and all kinds of bugs get in.    Use the bug net to cover the cot+sleeping bag.    This is available in Walmart, sports authority, dicks sporting goods etc.,

10.)Finally, for those Scouts new to Hidden Valley or just can’t remember how to get there, I have attached directions. Our Troop will be at Camp for Week # 7.  http://www.nhscouting.org/openrosters/ViewOrgPageLink.aspx?LinkKey=12251
