June 6-7 Campout Information

5/28/2015

It's getting close to time for the June 6/7 campout, so here's the initial plan.

a) Fees: As mentioned, while the Troop is somewhat subsidizing costs, there is a fee for this trip: $25 per Scout for museum and food, and $10 per adult to help food costs (adults are free for the museum.)  I'll be asking for payment at the next meeting, thanks.

b) Schedule: Saturday morning amass at the Church 8 am, departure likely 830 am, stay tuned for exact time.  Postal Museum will run approximately 10am - 2pm.  We plan to be at the camp by 3 pm. Departure from the campground is Sunday afternoon, after lunch cleanup.  Plan to return at Tedeschi's mid Sunday afternoon.

c) Bag Lunch: Scouts and Adults will need a bag lunch for Saturday afternoon at the museum.

d) Homework: The Stamp Collecting Merit Badge Councilor has assigned a quick and easy assignment for the Merit Badge - Each Scout must design his own stamp, any country and subject, but with proper denomination.  Please see http://www.scouting.org/scoutsource/BoyScouts/AdvancementandAwards/MeritBadges/mb-STAM.aspx for more information on the Merit Badge.  Everyone should be able to do this and bring it with them on Saturday, and will be able to complete the Merit Badge.

e) Campout Focus: The focus is advancement requirements.  To help provide more opportunity, we will be defining four temporary patrols for this campout.  Scouts will cook three hot meals: Saturday Dinner, Sunday breakfast, and Sunday lunch.  Details at the next Troop meeting, Jun 1st, where we also assign patrol leaders for each patrol to put together a patrol duty roster.

f) Attendees: 18 Scouts and 8 Adults have signed up

g) Drivers: We will need drivers.  BSA insurance covers drivers and Scouts, but to drive we need to collect driver and vehicle information ahead of time and submit forms.  Please let Mr. Rhodes know if you can drive and how many Scouts you can take.

h) Signed Documentation: Everyone must sign and hand in the attached consent form.  Anyone, including adults, who has not handed in medical forms within the past year must fillout and submit medical forms A & B Monday night, June 1st.  Forms are attached.  Reminder, all adults going on this trip are required to have completed Youth Protection Training.  If you have not completed YPT within the past two years, please do so here and bring a copy of the completion certificate to the June 1st meeting.  You'll need an account. Thanks

i) Cell Phones: We have been hearing reports of cell phone use within the tents at night.  As a reminder, cell phone are not permitted on campouts as our focus is on outdoor activities.  They must be left in the vehicles or left behind altogether.

Summer Camp Updates

5/18/2015

  1. Mr. Jennings is waiting on receiving the revised invoice from the camp based on the most recent payment.  Once we receive that, we will send out an update next week.   Out of the 19 scouts signed up for summer camp, there are still a few scouts who have not paid.    The new fee is $410 for anyone who has not paid by the deadline set by the camp.
  2. There is an additional $25 for scouts who have signed up for the shotgun merit badge.   Any scout who has signed up for this should pay this fee if they have not already paid it.   Any scout who has not submitted merit badge selection should submit the selection sheet to myself or Mr. Rhodes on monday 5/18/2015.
  3. All medical forms should be received by the camp by 6/1/2015.   We have received only 5 medical forms for scouts so far.    Since we do not have a meeting on 5/25/2015, ALL medical forms should be submitted to myself or Mr. Rhodes by 6/1/2015.    Important note regarding medical forms: NO ATTACHMENTS.  All details have to be filled in the form by the doctor/nurse.  Please let the medical office know explicitly that CAMP is not accepting any attachments.  This is specifically applicable to the immunization records.  If you request it to be filled in the form, medical offices will comply.
  4. Scouts and Adults who needs medications while at Camp will need to fill out the Medication Distribution Form, as well as the permission to carry form if they have an inhaler or epic-pen.   ALL medications should be in the original prescription bottle/box showing the patients name, dosage details and expiry details.    Please bag all medications in a ziplock bag with your name and troop number on it.
  5. Any Scout leaving camp before Saturday 8/15 will need a early dismissal form filled out and on file prior to attending Camp
  6. We need a minimum of 2 adults at the camp.   Based on 19 scouts, the camp will allow 3 adults to stay for free.   Any additional adults will be charged.   Between Mr. Rhodes, Mrs. Weatherby and myself, we have covered one adult requirement for the whole week.   Adult volunteers interested in attending the camp and helping the troop out should come to the troop meeting on Monday 5/18 so that we can set this schedule.   This information needs to be sent to the camp along with the rest of the paperwork during the week of 6/1.   We also need to note down adults who will be driving to the camp to drop off scouts on 8/9 and picking them up on  8/15 to ensure we have enough drivers.
  7. All adult leaders/volunteers planning to attend summer camp should submit the medical form Part "A", "B", and "C".    All medication rules are applicable for both scouts and adults.  All medications have to be turned into the nurse at the camp except for medications which you will be authorized to carry (documented in permission to carry form) .  Once again, NO ATTACHMENTS allowed for medical forms.
  8. All adult leaders/volunteers planning to attend summer camp should have  completed Youth protection training.  This training is valid for 2 years.   If your training validity will expire by 8/9 OR if you have not taken this training, please do so quickly.   This can be done online.  Please carry the printout of the training completion certificate with you during the week of the camp.
  9. Scouts should review the Merit Badge Pre-requisite Guide that is attached for additional information regarding items that need to be completed prior to camp and/or additional materials that might be required.

 - Please mark June 6/7 aside on the calendar for a Scout campout at Hale Reservation in Westwood.  This is the same place we went for Scout-O.  The theme of the car/trailer campout is Advancement where we try to knock out a number of requirements in time for Spring COH, and provide the Scouts with an opportunity to obtain the Stamp Collecting Merit Badge as we visit the Spellman Museum of Stamps and Postal History on the way out.  Details to follow in coming weeks.

5) Webelos Cross Over May 15.  Pack 76 will be graduating one of their Webelos to our Troop Friday night, May 15, 7:30 at CCC.  Our SPL and ASPL are expected to be there, and any additional Scouts who would like to be part of it are encouraged to show up in the Class A's to welcome our new Scout.  The more the merrier.. it encourages the next round of Webelos as well!

The class will begin next Wednesday, the 13th, at 7 pm at the Ames Clubhouse off Canton St.

Hope we all have recouped from our awesome trip to West Point.  Quick reminder that there is a meeting at the usual time and location tonight.  If you have equipment to return from the trip tonight that would be great; otherwise please plan to return it at the next meeting.  Scouts have tents, tarps, cook kits, and a stove/fuel.

Summer Camp Payments were due last Monday.  You can still get in at the reduced rate of if you get your payments in tonight, as the check is going out tomorrow.  Otherwise the rate climbs $410.

Summer Camp Med Forms: If you haven't already done so, please schedule an appt with your doctor to get these forms (attached again) completed.  We need these forms by June 1st, less than a month away.  Some doctors will want to perform a physical before signing, so consider their time constraints.
