New Scouting Year Begins

9/2/2011

Hi Everyone,

The new Scouting year is coming quickly, so be please note some of the following getting started information;

1.)The first meeting will be on Monday, September 12th starting at 7:15.

2.)The first campout will be Saturday, September 17th. We will be going to the Mt. Washington State Forest in Western MA for a backpacking trip. Since we only have one week to get ready, please respond back to me via e-mail, if you would like to attend so that I can begin putting all the driver’s information together. This trip will be similar to the one we did in December, however likely to be warmer. We will carry everything in and out, no trailer or larger equipment.

Canoe Trip

5/25/2011

Hi Everyone,

A few last minute reminders regarding our trip this weekend;

1.)The Troop will be meeting on Thursday night at 7:30 at the Church parking lot to load everything. Scouts should bring all personal equipment, Troop gear and Food for the weekend. Mr. Mallors will be repacking all perishables into coolers, and non-perishables into boxes, so everything should be labeled and put into zip lock bags if appropriate. We will then review any last minute details for the trip. All adults that are planning on attending this event should plan to attend Thursday as well, so that we can get all the transportation properly set up. Scouts and adults should bring in the $65.00 payment for this trip.

2.)Scouts that have PFD’s should bring them on Thursday.

3.)Scouts will be travelling in Class “A” uniforms, as well as wearing the Class “A” for Cooperstown and the ride home. The red Class “B” shirt will be for Saturday at the canoe regatta.

4.)The Troop will be leaving from the Church parking lot at 3:00 on Friday afternoon. Please be on time as it is a 5 hour trip to Camp Henderson in New York. Those Scouts that are going to be at Six Flags, please make sure that you have turned in a permission slip from your parents allowing Mrs. Jennings to pick you up at 5:00 on Friday at Six Flags and bring you to meet up with the Troop.

5.)Please remember to bring a bag “dinner” for the ride to New York, as we will be making limited stops for bathroom breaks and that will be all that we have time for.

6.)In addition to the usual camping gear, Scouts should bring an extra set of clothing for Saturday, (in case they get wet), water shoes and/or old pair of sneakers that can get wet, a beach towel.

7.)Scouts will need funds for Saturday’s dinner at the fairground, lunch in Cooperstown, souvenirs and for lunch on the ride home Sunday. The $65.00 payment includes the camp site registration, admission to Baseball Hall of Fame and Howe Caverns, and registration in the canoe race.

8.)For those parents that sometimes wonder where we are or what we are doing, please note the following schedule;

       Friday: Departing at 3:00 for Camp Henderson BSA, in Maryland, New
        York……set up camp.

      Saturday: Camp Henderson in the morning….canoe races in Bainbridge, New
      York from 11:00 – 7:00 (includes time at fairground)

      Sunday: Camp Henderson in the morning…Cooperstown from 10:00 till 3:00       then back to camp.

      Monday: Camp Henderson departure at 8:30…..Howe Caverns from 10:00 till
      1:00…home to Easton, back by 7:00 or so.

9.)Reminder to those Scouts buying the food!!!!! Saturday Morning…hot breakfast, Saturday lunch…items to prepare a bag lunch for each Scout in the Patrol, Sunday Morning….cold breakfast, Sunday dinner…Dutch oven cook off and Monday Morning…cold breakfast. Please don’t forget the adults when planning your food.

That should be about all until Thursday night when we meet again.

April Campout

4/8/2011

Hi Everyone,

We are still working to pull off the trip to New Hampshire next weekend, but need a few more things to fall into place;

1.)Due to lack of “overnight” drivers and potential campground, it looks like this trip will become a day trip on Sunday, April 17th. Therefore, I need to know if we have any volunteer adults willing to drive, presently I have three vehicles, but could use a few more. Please let me know if anyone can help out.

2.)We are waiting on final approval that we can go for ½ price, based on our community service. Once we get this approved, then I can pass along the final trip information.

3.)If we go , likely we will be leaving early Sunday morning and returning early evening. More information to follow.

4.)Anyone wanting to go on this trip, must be signed up by Monday, so that we can make all the proper arrangements. Presently, I have the following Scouts and Adults signed up;

1.)T.J. Clifford
2.)Phillip Michalowski
3.)Nick Cadmus
4.)Jonathan Berry
5.)Mike Brown
6.)Jacob Jennings
7.)Ben Jennings
8.)Josh Segill
9.)Gennaro Ciatto
10.)Tommy Dew
11.)Jay Kaufman
12.)James Sullivan
13.)Mark Jennings (3 Scouts)
14.)Stewart Dew (4 Scouts)
15.)Mike Berry (4 Scouts)

Please let me know if you have any questions.

April Outing

4/5/2011

Hi Everyone,

When the Troop was last polled about a trip to New Hampshire to go on a zip line adventure, at least 15 Scouts were interested. Last night only 6 Scouts signed up. I would appreciate it if I could get a yes or no response via e-mail as to which Scouts and adults would like to go on April 16th and 17th, as we are trying to make arrangements for a discounted group price and trying to locate a campground, but will need to postpone this outing if there is not enough interest.  I will definitely need drivers with space for Scouts and equipment if we go. Please let me know as soon as possible so that we can make arrangements either way.

Hello Everyone,

Thanks to those who were able to make our Silpada fundraising party last night for Boy Scout Troop 42 in Easton . For those who could not make it, please see below for the Silpada on line web site. If you are interested in ordering, the party will remain open until this Wednesday. Unfortunately, ordering on-line will not be possible until April so please contact Patty Dew, the Silpada representative if you are interested in ordering. Her telephone number is listed on her web site.

Feel free to contact me as well if you have any questions.

Thank you,

Reminders

3/25/2011

Hi Everyone,

A few Troop reminders of what is coming up;

1.)Tonight, Friday, March 25 the Troop will be holding the Silpada Jewelry Party Fundraiser at the Church from 7:00 – 9:00. Parents should pass the word along to friends to please try and stop by to support Scouting and the Troop, in its efforts to raise money for Gettysburg and other trips. Scouts do not need to attend this event, just parents and friends.

2.)Monday night, March 28th, Scouts that need to attend the Selectman’s meeting for MBU should plan on being at Town Hall by 6:30 in uniform. Likely that we will need a couple of parents to stay and drive the Scouts from the Town Hall back to the Church after the meeting.

3.)On April 2nd , the Scouts will be holding a car wash fundraiser. Scouts should sign up at Monday’s meeting. This event will run from 9:00 till we run out of cars to wash…likely 2:00 or so.Funds raised will help support our Troop in traveling to Gettysburg this summer, so any Scout attending that event in July should plan on lending a hand.

Camp Sayre

3/17/2011

Hi Everyone,

A few details regarding this weekend’s campout;

1.)We will be leaving the Church parking lot by 6:30 and heading over to Camp Sayre. Please let me know if you will arriving later in the evening or on Saturday morning.

2.)I am still wondering what the Scouts that left the cook kits at the Church on Monday are going to do…..should be interesting.

3.)Scouts will be sleeping in “lean-to’s”, basically three sided unheated structures, so please plan accordingly. Scouts have the option of sleeping in tents, if they prefer.

4.)On Saturday, the Troop will be heading out for a hike into the Blue Hills around 10:00, so if you are coming Saturday, please try and get there before 10:00, so that we can get off on time.

5.)Scouts should come prepared for the Spring weather….cold and warm, wet and dry, meaning proper layering of clothing, waterproof hiking boots and rain gear. Scouting is Outing, so please be prepared.

6.)Scouts might want to bring a smaller day pack for the hike, to carry extra clothing, snacks, lunch, etc. Scouts should have at least two full size water bottles for the hike.

7.) Scouts should eat dinner on Friday before coming to the Church.

8.) The Troop should be back by 11:00 or so on Sunday, we will meet at the parking lot at the Village Shoppes across from Hillard’s.

9.)Adults….please let me know by return e-mail if you are planning on attending and/or driving. We might need a couple of additional drivers to get us there and back on Sunday.

See everyone on Friday evening.

Mr. Jennings

Reminders

3/3/2011

Hi Everyone,

A few reminders for some Troop 42 activities;

1.)    Merit Badge University starts this Saturday, March 5th. The classes run from 8:40 till 12:40, but I recommend that everyone try and get there around 8:15 for the first day, as it will be a little chaotic. This year the Scouts will be going right to the first period class, with no opening ceremony in the gym. Merit Badge books will be handed out at the first period, but I recommend that each Scout check out the requirements on line so that you are familiar with what is expected to complete the Merit Badge. Scouts should try and carpool if possible. Please print out and review the Merit Badge Class schedule that was sent out last week and is available on the Troop 42 website.

2.)    The March Campout will March 18th thru the 20th, and we have decided to go to Camp Sayre in Milton. The Troop will be staying Lean-to’s and tents, along with hiking in the Blue Hills. The original rocket campout has been postponed until a later date.

3.)    The Troop is still planning on going to New York over Memorial Day Weekend, to visit the Baseball Hall of Fame and compete in a canoe regatta. Presently, we are working on some early planning, starting with canoes…looking to get 6 canoes, either renting or borrowing, so if you know anyone that can help out please let me know.

Annual Health and Medical Record form changes

2/28/2011

Effective 3/1/11 – Annual Health and Medical Record forms have been updated/changed.  Also, effective immediately Part C MUST be signed/stamped by a certified and licensed health care provider – physician, nurse practitioner, or physician assistant. (See below)

New forms are available on the Boy Scouts of America website.  If your Scouts forms are currently valid nothing will change at this moment although there is a chance that it will be necessary to update forms for Camp this summer.  Still waiting for a final decision. I’ll keep in touch.  If you have any questions, please feel free to call me at 508-238-4147.  Thanks, Louise ~

(Valid for 12 calendar months) Policy on Use of the Annual Health and Medical Record

In order to provide better care for its members and to assist them in better understanding their own physical capabilities, the Boy Scouts of America recommends that everyone who participates in a Scouting event have an annual medical evaluation by a certified and licensed health-care provider—a physician (MD or DO), nurse practitioner, or physician assistant. Providing your medical information on this

four-part form will help ensure you meet the minimum standards for participation in various activities. Note that unit leaders must always protect the privacy of unit participants by protecting their medical information.

Parts A and B are to be completed at least annually by participants in all Scouting events. This health history, parental/guardian informed consent and hold harmless/release agreement, and talent release statement is to be completed by the participant and parents/guardians.

Part C is the physical exam that is required for participants in any event that exceeds 72 consecutive hours, for all high-adventure base participants, or when the nature of the activity is strenuous and demanding. Service projects or work weekends may fit this description. Part C is to be completed and signed by a certified and licensed heath-care provider—physician (MD or DO), nurse practitioner, or physician assistant. It is important to note that the height/weight limits must be strictly adhered to when the event will take the unit more than 30 minutes away from an emergency vehicle, accessible roadway, or when the program requires it, such as backpacking trips, high-adventure activities, and conservation projects in remote areas. See the FAQs for when this does not apply.

Part D is required to be reviewed by all participants of a high-adventure program at one of the national high-adventure bases and shared with the examining health-care provider before completing Part C.
